How This Australian Tax Return Estimate Is Calculated

Your Australian tax return result depends on several components stacked together: progressive income tax brackets, the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO), the Medicare levy (and surcharge, if applicable), and any compulsory HELP/HECS repayment. The ATO compares your total liability against tax already withheld from your pay (PAYG) to determine your refund or bill.

🔑 Key Terms Explained

PAYG Withholding: Tax your employer deducts from each pay and sends to the ATO on your behalf throughout the year, based on ATO withholding schedules and your declared circumstances (e.g. HELP debt, tax-free threshold claim).

Taxable Income: Your assessable income (salary, wages, investment income, etc.) minus allowable deductions. This estimator treats your input as the final taxable income figure.

LITO: A non-refundable tax offset that directly reduces your tax payable (not your taxable income), targeted at low and middle income earners.

Refund vs Tax Bill: If your PAYG withholding during the year exceeds your final calculated liability (tax + Medicare + HELP), you receive the difference as a refund. If withholding fell short, you'll owe the ATO the shortfall.

💡 Example: $85,000 Income, $19,500 Withheld, No HELP Debt

1. Gross Income Tax: $4,288 + 30% × ($85,000 − $45,000) = $4,288 + $12,000 = $16,288
2. LITO: Income exceeds $66,667, so LITO = $0
3. Income Tax Payable: $16,288
4. Medicare Levy: Income is above $35,013, so full 2% applies: $85,000 × 2% = $1,700
5. Total Liability: $16,288 + $1,700 = $17,988
6. Tax Withheld: $19,500
7. Estimated Refund: $19,500 − $17,988 = $1,512

If this taxpayer also had a HELP debt, a further $2,700 (15% × $18,000 over the $67,000 threshold) would be added, turning the refund into a tax bill instead.

⚠️ Important Notes

— This estimator assumes no work-related deductions beyond what's already reflected in your taxable income figure — real returns often include deductions that change the final result.
— Medicare levy here uses the single, non-senior threshold; families and seniors should also check the dedicated Medicare Levy Calculator for family/SAPTO thresholds.
— Other offsets (e.g. private health insurance rebate adjustments, spouse offsets, or business income concessions) are not modelled here.
— Foreign residents have no tax-free threshold, different brackets, and generally don't pay the Medicare levy or LITO.
— For an official assessment, use ATO myTax or a registered tax agent.

Frequently Asked Questions

For 2025-26, residents pay 0% up to $18,200, 16% from $18,201 to $45,000, 30% from $45,001 to $135,000, 37% from $135,001 to $190,000, and 45% above $190,000. These are the Stage 3 settings that have applied since 1 July 2024.

LITO is a tax offset of up to $700 for taxpayers with taxable income up to $37,500. It reduces by 5 cents for every dollar between $37,500 and $45,000, then by 1.5 cents for every dollar between $45,000 and $66,667, where it cuts out entirely. It directly reduces your tax payable, not your taxable income.

Your total tax liability — income tax after offsets, plus Medicare levy, Medicare Levy Surcharge, and HELP repayment if applicable — is compared against the tax already withheld by your employer during the year (PAYG withholding). If withholding exceeds your liability, you get a refund; if it's less, you owe the ATO the difference.

From 2025-26, HELP repayments use a marginal system: nil below $67,000 repayment income, 15% on the portion between $67,001 and $125,000, then $8,700 plus 17% on the portion above $125,000, capped at a flat 10% of total repayment income once it exceeds $179,285.

This estimator only models income tax, LITO, the Medicare levy/surcharge, and HELP repayment based on the figures you enter. It doesn't account for work-related deductions, other tax offsets, multiple income sources, or specific circumstances a tax agent or myTax would include in a full assessment.

No. This is an estimate only, based on simplified inputs. Your actual tax return may include deductions, other offsets, additional income types, or surcharge interactions not modelled here. Lodge through myTax, a registered tax agent, or the ATO for an official, legally binding assessment.

⚠️ Disclaimer: This calculator provides a simplified estimate based on 2025/2026 ATO resident tax brackets, LITO, Medicare levy, and HELP repayment rates.
