How a Canadian Paycheque Is Calculated

Your gross pay is reduced by four main deductions before it reaches your bank account: federal income tax, provincial or territorial income tax, CPP (or QPP in Quebec), and EI (at a reduced rate in Quebec, where QPIP covers parental leave). Optional deductions like RRSP contributions, union dues, or benefit premiums come off too.

💡 Example Calculation

Scenario: Ontario resident paid $2,300 bi-weekly ($59,800/year), no RRSP.

1. Gross annual income: $59,800
2. Federal tax: ~$8,375
3. Ontario tax: ~$3,235
4. CPP: (59,800 − 3,500) × 5.95% = $3,350
5. EI: $59,800 × 1.63% = $974.74
6. Total annual deductions: ~$15,935
7. Net annual income: ~$43,865 → about $1,687 per bi-weekly paycheque

Note: This is a simplified example using bracket rates only, without the basic personal amount credit, so actual take-home pay is typically a bit higher.

⚠️ Important Notes

- This calculator gives estimates only for employment income, using 2026 bracket rates.
- It does not apply the basic personal amount or other non-refundable tax credits, so results will tend to overestimate tax owing slightly.
- CPP/QPP and EI automatically stop once you hit the annual maximum — this calculator assumes a full year at the entered pay rate.
- Bonuses, overtime, and irregular pay are often withheld at different rates than regular pay.
- For payroll-accurate figures, use the CRA's Payroll Deductions Online Calculator (PDOC), or Revenu Québec if you work in Quebec.

Frequently Asked Questions

Four main things: federal income tax, provincial/territorial income tax, CPP (or QPP in Quebec), and EI premiums. Optional deductions like RRSP contributions, union dues, or benefit premiums can reduce take-home pay further.

For 2026, CPP is 5.95% on earnings between $3,500 and $74,600 (max $4,230.45). CPP2, introduced in 2024, adds 4% on earnings between $74,600 and $85,000 (max $416). The combined employee maximum is $4,646.45.

For 2026, EI is 1.63% on insurable earnings up to $68,900 (max $1,123.07). Quebec residents pay a reduced 1.30% rate (max $895.70) because QPIP covers parental leave separately.

Quebec residents pay QPP instead of CPP, at a higher combined rate of 10.3% versus CPP's 5.95% (on the same earnings band). EI is reduced to 1.30%, and federal tax gets a 16.5% Quebec abatement since the province funds equivalent programs itself. This calculator applies all three automatically when you select Quebec.

The lowest federal rate dropped to a full 14% for 2026, tax brackets rose roughly 2% for inflation, the CPP earnings ceiling (YMPE) rose to $74,600, and EI's maximum insurable earnings rose to $68,900. Most provinces also adjusted their own brackets and basic personal amounts.

This calculator provides estimates only based on 2026 bracket rates, without the basic personal amount or other credits. For payroll-accurate figures, use the CRA's Payroll Deductions Online Calculator (PDOC), or Revenu Québec's calculator if you work in Quebec.
