How German Income Tax (Einkommensteuer) Works

Germany doesn't use simple fixed tax brackets like many other countries. Instead, §32a EStG defines a continuous mathematical formula with five zones — the marginal rate rises smoothly as income increases, without sudden jumps. The first €12,348 (2026) of income is completely tax-free (the Grundfreibetrag), after which rates rise gradually from 14% to 42%, with a top "Reichensteuer" rate of 45% for very high earners.

🏛️ The Five Tax Zones (2026, Single Filers)

Zone Taxable Income (zvE) Marginal Rate
1 — Grundfreibetrag €0 – €12,348 0%
2 — First progression zone €12,349 – €17,799 14% → 24% (rising smoothly)
3 — Second progression zone €17,800 – €69,878 24% → 42% (rising smoothly)
4 — Top rate (Spitzensteuersatz) €69,879 – €277,825 42% flat
5 — Wealth tax (Reichensteuer) Above €277,825 45% flat

Married couples filing jointly (Zusammenveranlagung) get double these thresholds via Ehegattensplitting — the combined income is halved, taxed at single-filer rates, then the result is doubled.

📝 On Top of Income Tax

Solidarity Surcharge (Soli): A 5.5% surcharge on your income tax, but abolished for around 90% of taxpayers since 2021 — in 2026 it only kicks in once your income tax exceeds approximately €20,350 (single) or €40,700 (married).

Church Tax (Kirchensteuer): 8% (Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg) or 9% (all other states) of your income tax, only for registered members of recognised churches.

Social Security Contributions (2026): Split roughly 50/50 between employer and employee. The employee's share is approximately Pension 9.3% (capped at €101,400), Health ~8.75% (capped at €69,750), Long-term care 1.8%–2.4% (capped at €69,750, higher if childless), and Unemployment 1.3% (capped at €101,400).

💡 Example Calculation

Scenario: Single filer, €60,000 gross salary, no church tax, has children.

1. Taxable income (approx.): €60,000 − €1,230 standard deduction = €58,770
2. Income tax (§32a formula): approximately €13,888
3. Solidarity surcharge: €0 (income tax below the ~€20,350 threshold)
4. Social security: Pension €5,580 + Health €5,250 + Care €1,080 + Unemployment €780 = €12,690
5. Net income: €60,000 − €13,888 − €12,690 ≈ €33,422

Note: This is a simplified estimate. Your actual tax return may allow additional deductions (Vorsorgeaufwendungen, Werbungskosten above the standard amount, etc.) that reduce your final liability.

⚠️ Important Notes

- This calculator provides estimates only, based on the 2026 §32a EStG formula applied to (Gross Income − €1,230 Arbeitnehmer-Pauschbetrag).
- It does not model full deductibility of pension and health insurance contributions (Vorsorgeaufwendungen), which can meaningfully reduce actual taxable income.
- The solidarity surcharge calculation is simplified — it does not model the exact tapering "Milderungszone" near the exemption threshold.
- It does not include Kinderfreibetrag/Kindergeld optimization, additional Werbungskosten, or other itemized deductions.
- Social security rates and caps are 2026 averages — your actual health insurance rate depends on your specific Krankenkasse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Germany does not use fixed tax brackets. Instead, §32a EStG defines a continuous mathematical formula with five zones. The marginal rate rises smoothly from 0% (below the Grundfreibetrag of €12,348 in 2026) to 14%, then continuously up to 42%, and finally 45% for very high incomes above €277,825.

The Grundfreibetrag is Germany's basic tax-free allowance. In 2026 it is €12,348 per person (€24,696 for married couples filing jointly). Income up to this amount is completely tax-free, and it's applied automatically — no application needed.

The Solidaritätszuschlag is a 5.5% surcharge on your income tax, originally introduced to fund German reunification. Since 2021 it has been abolished for roughly 90% of taxpayers — in 2026 it only applies if your annual income tax exceeds approximately €20,350 (single) or €40,700 (married filing jointly).

Ehegattensplitting is Germany's income-splitting method for married couples filing jointly. The combined income is halved, the tax formula is applied to that half, and the result is doubled. This is most beneficial when partners have very different incomes, since it effectively shifts some of the higher earner's income into lower tax zones.

Church tax (Kirchensteuer) only applies to registered members of recognised churches (mainly Catholic and Protestant). It's 8% of your income tax in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, and 9% everywhere else. You can avoid it by formally leaving the church (Kirchenaustritt) at your local registry office.

It approximates taxable income as (Gross Income − €1,230 standard deduction) and does not model full deductibility of pension/health contributions, itemized deductions, or the exact solidarity surcharge tapering zone. Social security rates are 2026 averages and vary by insurer. For exact figures, use the official BMF Lohn- und Einkommensteuerrechner or consult a Steuerberater.
