How Take-Home Pay Works in Singapore

Take-home pay in Singapore works differently from many countries because of how the two main deductions — CPF and income tax — are collected. CPF is deducted from every payslip, just like a normal payroll deduction. Income tax, however, is not withheld monthly for most employees — IRAS assesses your tax after the year ends and sends a bill (Notice of Assessment) that you pay separately, often via GIRO installments. This means your monthly bank deposit is higher than your true "after everything" take-home pay unless you set aside money for the annual tax bill yourself.

🏦 CPF: The Only Payroll Deduction (for Citizens & PRs)

For 2026, Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents aged 55 and below contribute 20% of wages to CPF, matched by a 17% employer contribution — a combined 37%. CPF applies to Ordinary Wages up to $8,000 a month and total annual wages up to $102,000. Employer CPF is paid on top of your salary and doesn't reduce your take-home pay — only the employee share is deducted from your payslip. Foreigners on Employment Passes, S Passes, or Work Permits don't contribute to CPF, so their monthly take-home pay equals their full salary (before the separate annual tax bill).

🏛️ Income Tax: Billed Annually, Not Withheld

Unlike PAYE-style systems, Singapore doesn't deduct income tax from your monthly salary. Tax residents pay progressive rates from 0% (first $20,000 of chargeable income) up to 24% (above $1,000,000), calculated on your chargeable income — gross income minus CPF Relief and personal reliefs. IRAS sends a Notice of Assessment after you file, usually payable within a month, or by GIRO instalment over up to 12 months.

💡 Example Calculation

Scenario: Singapore Citizen, age 35, $80,000 annual salary.

1. Employee CPF (20%): $80,000 × 20% = $16,000/year (≈ $1,333/month)
2. Monthly take-home (before tax): ($80,000 − $16,000) ÷ 12 = $5,333/month
3. Chargeable income: $80,000 − $16,000 CPF Relief − $1,000 Earned Income Relief = $63,000
4. Annual income tax: $2,160 — billed separately by IRAS, not deducted monthly
5. True net annual take-home (after both CPF and tax): $80,000 − $16,000 − $2,160 = $61,840

Note: This is a simplified example. Actual tax may differ based on specific reliefs claimed.

⚠️ Important Notes

- This calculator provides estimates only, based on 2026 CPF rates and YA 2026 IRAS resident tax rates.
- Income tax is shown as an annual figure since it isn't deducted per pay period for most employees — budget for it separately from your monthly take-home pay.
- It applies CPF Relief and Earned Income Relief automatically but doesn't model every specific personal relief (Spouse, Parent, Qualifying Child, etc.).
- CPF rates above 55 are simplified estimates — exact rates vary by specific age band.
- For exact figures, use the official IRAS Income Tax Calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Take-home pay is what you actually receive after your employee CPF contribution and income tax are accounted for. Note that CPF is deducted from your payslip each month, while income tax is usually billed separately by IRAS after you file your annual return, rather than withheld monthly like in many other countries.

Generally no. Unlike CPF, which is deducted every payday, Singapore does not withhold income tax from monthly salaries for most employees. IRAS assesses your tax after the year ends and sends a Notice of Assessment, which you then pay directly — often in installments via GIRO. This calculator shows tax as an annual figure so you can budget for it.

For 2026, Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents aged 55 and below contribute 20% of wages to CPF, matched by a 17% employer contribution. CPF applies to Ordinary Wages up to $8,000 a month and total annual wages up to $102,000. Foreigners on work passes don't contribute to CPF.

No. Your employee CPF contribution is deducted from your salary and placed into your CPF accounts for retirement, housing, and healthcare — it isn't cash in hand. Your employer's CPF contribution is paid on top of your salary and also goes into your CPF accounts, not your take-home pay.

Most Singapore employees are paid monthly (12 pay periods a year). Some receive an Annual Wage Supplement (13th month bonus) on top of their 12 monthly salaries, which is treated as an Additional Wage for CPF purposes.

⚠️ Disclaimer: This calculator provides estimates for informational purposes only, based on 2026 CPF rates and YA 2026 IRAS resident tax rates. Income tax is shown as an annual figure since Singapore generally does not withhold it per pay period — plan separately for your annual tax bill. It does not model every specific personal relief, one-off Budget tax rebates, or precise age-banded CPF rates above 55. For exact figures, use the official IRAS Income Tax Calculator.
