This calculator computes the difference between two calendar dates with several options so you can use the results for scheduling, billing, project timelines, travel, and legal deadlines.
Exclusive vs Inclusive counting
- Exclusive: The difference in full days between the two calendar dates (end - start). Use for elapsed time (e.g., how many days have passed).
- Inclusive: Adds one day so both start and end are counted (useful for nights stayed or inclusive ranges like event days).
Calendar-style difference (years, months, days)
The calendar-style breakdown subtracts whole years first, then whole months, then remaining days. This method respects varying month lengths and leap years — for example, 2019-01-31 → 2019-02-28 is reported as 0y 0m 28d, while 2019-01-31 → 2019-03-01 becomes 0y 1m 1d depending on how many full months fit between the dates.
Leap years and month-lengths
Leap days (Feb 29) are included automatically in the day count when they fall between the start and end dates. The tool uses actual calendar dates rather than fixed-day conversions to ensure accuracy across years and long ranges.
Business days (weekdays) option
If you enable Business Days, the calculator will count only Monday–Friday. Weekend days (Saturday & Sunday) are excluded. If you need to exclude holidays, we can add a holiday uploader or API to subtract official holidays for a chosen country/region.
Approximate months
For quick human-friendly output we convert days to months using the average month length (30.44 days). This is useful for approximate comparisons (e.g., 90 days ≈ 3.0 months). For legal or financial use, prefer the calendar-style result.
