How to Calculate Your Final Grade
Most courses use a weighted grading system where different types of assessments carry different importance. For example, a course might weight assignments at 30%, midterm tests at 30%, and a final exam at 40%. Your final grade is the weighted average — not a simple average — of all your scores.
The formula is: Final Grade = Σ (Score × Weight) / Σ Weights. For example, if you scored 85% on assignments (weight 30%), 78% on tests (weight 40%), and 92% on the final exam (weight 30%), your final grade is: (85×30 + 78×40 + 92×30) / 100 = (2550 + 3120 + 2760) / 100 = 84.3%.
Weighted Average vs. Simple Average
A simple average adds all scores and divides by the count — it assumes every assessment is equal. A weighted average multiplies each score by its importance before averaging. In the example above, a simple average of 85, 78, and 92 gives 85%, while the weighted average gives 84.3% because the lower test score has more weight. Always check your syllabus to know which system your course uses.

Required Score = (Target Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Exam Weight)) / Exam Weight
For example, if your current grade is 75%, the final exam is worth 30% (0.30), and your target is 80%:
Required Score = (80 − 75 × 0.70) / 0.30 = (80 − 52.5) / 0.30 = 27.5 / 0.30 = 91.7%
GPA Conversion
The standard US GPA scale runs from 0.0 to 4.0. An A or A+ is worth 4.0 GPA points, a B is 3.0, a C is 2.0, and a D is 1.0. Plus and minus grades have intermediate values: A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B− = 2.7, and so on. Your cumulative GPA is the credit-weighted average of all your course GPAs.
