How to Use a Scientific Calculator

A scientific calculator extends the basic four operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide) with advanced mathematical functions. It is essential for high school and university mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, and statistics. Unlike a basic calculator, a scientific calculator handles trigonometry, exponents, roots, and logarithms natively.

DEG vs. RAD — Which Should You Use?

The DEG/RAD toggle controls how angles are interpreted in trigonometric functions. Use DEG (Degrees) for geometry, navigation, and everyday problems — a right angle is 90°, a straight line is 180°, a full circle is 360°. Use RAD (Radians) for calculus, physics, and engineering — a right angle is π/2 ≈ 1.5708 rad, a full circle is 2π ≈ 6.2832 rad. Forgetting to switch modes is one of the most common errors — if sin(90) gives you 0.894 instead of 1, you are in RAD mode when you need DEG.

INV (Inverse) Mode

Press the INV button (highlighted in amber when active) to switch function buttons to their inverse. This gives you: sin⁻¹ (arcsin), cos⁻¹ (arccos), tan⁻¹ (arctan), sinh⁻¹, cosh⁻¹, tanh⁻¹, 10ˣ (inverse of log), and eˣ (inverse of ln). The orange labels on the buttons show what each key does in INV mode. Press INV again to return to normal.

Order of Operations (BODMAS / PEMDAS)

This calculator respects standard mathematical order of operations: Brackets → Orders (powers, roots) → Division/Multiplication → Addition/Subtraction. Use the ( ) parenthesis buttons to control grouping in complex expressions. For example, to compute (3 + 5) × 2, type: ( → 3 → + → 5 → ) → × → 2 → =.

Memory Functions Explained

The five memory keys work like a clipboard for numbers. MS stores the current number. MR recalls it. MC clears it. M+ adds the current number to the memory value (useful for running totals). M− subtracts the current number from memory. When memory holds a value, the M indicator appears on the display in cyan.
