How Salary Works in the UAE

The UAE's biggest advantage for employees is simple: there is no personal income tax. Whatever your employment contract states as your gross salary is what you take home — no payroll withholding, no annual tax return for salaried individuals. Where UAE compensation gets more complex is in its structure — salaries are typically split into a basic salary plus allowances (housing, transport, and others), and this split matters enormously for one specific benefit: your end-of-service gratuity.

🎁 How End-of-Service Gratuity Is Calculated

Gratuity (End-of-Service Benefit) is a statutory lump-sum payment under Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, owed to employees who complete at least 1 year of continuous service. It's calculated only on your basic salary — allowances, bonuses, commissions, and overtime are excluded.

Service Period Gratuity Rate
First 5 years of service21 days' basic pay per year
Each year beyond 530 days' basic pay per year
Maximum total2 years' (24 months') basic salary

Daily wage = basic monthly salary ÷ 30. Partial years are pro-rated once the 1-year minimum is met.

📝 Resignation vs. Termination: A Common Misconception

Under the old law (before February 2022), employees on unlimited contracts who resigned before 5 years received a reduced gratuity — as low as one-third for 1–3 years of service, two-thirds for 3–5 years. This penalty no longer exists. Since Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 took effect, resignation and termination are treated identically — you receive the full calculated gratuity as long as you've completed at least 1 year of continuous service and served any required notice period. Some outdated online calculators and articles still apply the old reduction — it's no longer legally correct.

💡 Example Calculation

Scenario: AED 10,000 basic salary, AED 3,000 housing, AED 1,000 transport, 4 years 6 months of service.

1. Gross monthly salary: AED 10,000 + AED 3,000 + AED 1,000 = AED 14,000
2. Income tax: AED 0 (UAE has no personal income tax)
3. Daily wage (for gratuity): AED 10,000 ÷ 30 = AED 333.33
4. Gratuity: 21 days × 4.5 years × AED 333.33 = AED 31,500
5. Net annual take-home: AED 14,000 × 12 = AED 168,000 (in full, no deductions)

Note: This is a simplified example. Actual final settlements may include unused leave pay, notice pay, and other adjustments not covered here.

⚠️ Important Notes

- This calculator provides estimates only, based on Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 and current MOHRE guidance.
- Gratuity applies to standard private-sector expatriate employees — UAE nationals are covered by the separate GPSSA pension system instead.
- This does not include unused annual leave payout, notice period pay, or other final settlement items — only the core salary and gratuity estimate.
- Domestic workers (maids, drivers, nannies) follow a different, simpler formula under Federal Decree-Law No. 9 of 2022 (one month's salary per year of service).
- Some employers participate in the Voluntary Alternative End-of-Service Benefits Savings Scheme instead of the standard formula — check your contract.
- For official guidance, see the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE).

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The UAE does not levy personal income tax on salaries, wages, or most other individual income. Your gross salary is your take-home pay — there is no payroll tax withholding for employees, whether you're a UAE national or an expatriate.

Gratuity is calculated on your basic salary only (excluding allowances) at 21 days' pay per year for the first 5 years of service, and 30 days' pay per year for each year beyond that. The daily wage is your basic monthly salary divided by 30. Total gratuity cannot exceed 2 years' basic salary.

No, not under current law. Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 (effective February 2022) removed the old reduction that gave resigning employees only one-third or two-thirds of their gratuity if they left before 5 years. Today, resignation and termination are treated identically for gratuity purposes, as long as you've completed at least one year of continuous service.

Only your fixed basic monthly salary as stated in your MOHRE-registered employment contract. Allowances such as housing, transport, schooling, and utilities are excluded, as are bonuses, commissions, and overtime pay. This is the single most common source of gratuity calculation disputes.

No. UAE nationals working in the private sector are covered by the GPSSA pension and social security system instead of the standard expatriate gratuity formula, with employee and employer contributions building a pension. This calculator's gratuity estimate applies to the standard expatriate formula only.
